Hair Extension Aftercare: 8 Things Your Extensionist Wants You to Know.
Share
New Hair Feeling: Unmatched.
You've just left the salon.
Length? Perfect.
Volume. Insane.
Confidence. Dangerous.
Now comes the less glamorous part: looking after it.
Whether you wear tapes, nanos, bonds, wefts or another extension system, proper aftercare matters. Exact instructions vary depending on your extension type, so your own stylist's guidance should always come first.
1. Know what type of extensions you're wearing
Tape aftercare isn't necessarily identical to nano-ring or bonded-extension aftercare.
Ask your extensionist exactly how long to wait before washing, which products to avoid and when they want you back for maintenance.
Screenshots are encouraged. Memory after a three-hour salon appointment cannot be trusted.
2. Brush gently
Start towards the ends and work upwards rather than dragging a brush straight through from the roots.
Use an extension-friendly brush recommended for your method and support the hair around the attachment area while detangling.
Aggresive brushing is not the vibe.
3. Conditioner and bonds are not besties
With many semi-permanent extension systems, heavy conditioner and oils shouldn't be appolied directly around the attachment points.
Keep conditioning products primarily through the mid-lengths and ends unless your stylist advises otherwise.
4. Don't go to bed with soaking-wet extensions
Dry them properly before sleeping.
Wet hair is more vulnerable to tangling and unncessary friction, exactly what you are trying to avoid.
5. Turn the temperature down
Heat can affect both your natural hair and extension hair.
Use appropriate heat protection and keep styling tools away from attachment points where required for your extension system.
6. Protect them while you sleep
Your stylist may recommend a loose plait, suitable night-time protection or a silk/satin pillowcase depending on your extension type.
The aim is simple: fewer knots, less friction, calmer mornings.
7. Don't miss maintenance appointments
If something feels loose, uncomfortable or looks wrong, speak to the person who fitted your extensions.
DIY surgery at 11pm with a pair of pliers is never the answer!
8. Don't forget about your own hair underneath
Extentions might be doing the visual heavy lifting, but your natural hair still matters.
Optifil Support My Extensions Gummies contain Biotin and Zinc. Biotin and Zinc each contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. The formulation also contains Vitamin E, which contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
A supplement won't replace proper extension aftercare, but nutrition can form part of your wider hair and beauty routine.
Look after the hair you brought and the hair you grew.
That's the extension rule we're taking into autumn and winter.
